چکیده

Lunar meteorite chip samples recovered by the National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR) have been studied by a UVevisibleenear-infrared spectrometer, targeting small areas of about 3 2 mm in size. Rock types and approximate mineral compositions of studied meteorites have been identified or obtained through this spectral survey with no sample preparation required. A linear deconvolution method was used to derive end-member mineral spectra from spectra of multiple clasts whenever possible. In addition, the modified Gaussian model was used in an attempt of deriving their major pyroxene compositions. This study demonstrates that a visible-near-infrared spectrometer on a lunar rover would be useful for identifying these kinds of unaltered (non-space-weathered) lunar rocks. In order to prepare for such a future mission, further studies which utilize a smaller spot size are desired for improving the accuracy of identifying the clasts and mineral phases of the rocks. © 2016 Elsevier B.V. and NIPR. A Lunar Spectral Flux Database for Quantitative Viirs Day/night Band Environmental Applications

Visible-band (e.g., 0.4-0.7 μm) satellite radiometers are used almost exclusively for daytime observations, when a significant amount of sunlight reflection is available. Silicon photodetectors offer adequate sensitivity to a broad range of daytime visible light (e.g.,10 to 10 W/m-sr-μm). Examples of such sensors include the visible channels on the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHR...

Visible/near Infrared Spectral Characterization of Brecciated Mare Basalt Flow and Surface Mare Basalt

Introduction: Lunar mare basalts are products of partial melting of the lunar interior, thus are keys to understand the chemical compositions of the source mantle. However, the iron-enrichment of the mare basalt samples returned by Apollo and Luna missions, compared to the terrestrial basalts, have led to an inference that the mare basalt hand specimen do not represent the primary magma composi...

Lunar Mare Basalts as Analogues for Martian Volcanic Compositions: Evidence from Visible, Near-ir, and Thermal Emission Spectroscopy

Introduction: The lunar mare basalts potentially provide a unique sample suite for understanding the nature of basalts on the martian surface. Our current knowledge of the mineralogical and chemical composition of the basaltic material on Mars comes from studies of the basaltic martian meteorites and from orbital and surface remote sensing observations. Petrographic observations of basaltic mar...

Determination of Leaf Relative Water Content of Two Genotypes of Sesame Using Visible and Near- Infrared (VIS/NIR) Spectrometry to Detect Drought Stress

Relative water content (RWC) in plants is one of the most important biochemical parameters and its deficiency limits efficiency of photosynthesis and crop productivity. The scientific reports on using spectroscopy in detecting drought stress for sesame plants are very rare. In this study, the possibility of identifying water stress in two sensitive (Naz-Takshakhe) and resistant (Yekta) genotype...

SPACE WEATHERING ON ASTEROIDS: NEW RESULTS FROM THE ULTRAVIOLET. F. Vilas and A

Introduction: We present evidence that space weathering manifests itself at near-ultraviolet wavelengths as a bluing of the spectrum, in contrast with the spectral reddening that has been seen at visible-near-IR wavelengths. This UV bluing often results in a spectral reversal, where surfaces that are bright at visible-near-IR wavelengths are relatively dark at UV wavelengths, and vice-versa. Fu...
